What was the key to Grimsby's success in
Now then, a glorious day for football
fans in Grimby after the Towns Club
managed to knock Manchester United out
of the Carabel Cup. The Mariners stunned
the Red Devils when they took a twogoal
lead before Halime. Charles Vernon
scoring with a sublime finish. There it
was in just the 22nd minute. Tyrell
Warren adding to the score sheet just 8
minutes later. The drama though didn't
end there. United mounted a comeback.
center back Harry Maguire equaling in
the 88th minute with a bullet header
from the back post. Ruben Amarin's men
had a lifeline and were hoping to put
the last 90 minutes behind them when it
went to a penalty shootout. And what a
shootout it was, but it wasn't meant to
be. Brian and Bumo sealing Manchester
United's fate when his spot kick smashed
into the crossbar, putting Grimby into
the next round. Well, United Head's
coach Ruben Amarin told Sky Sports after
the game, "The best team had won.
>> The best team won. The only team that
was on the pitch, uh, the best players
lose because one team can win um against
any group of of players. And um I think
I think the I think that the team and
the players spoke really loud today. Uh
so uh that's it and uh we lost the best
team won.
>> Let's talk to that best team, shall we?
David Art, Grimbytown manager joining
us. Uh David, how you doing?
>> All right, go. Thank you. How are you?
>> Yeah, not too bad. How's how's the blood
pressure? How's the head this morning?
>> It's fine. It's fine. Um look, it's all
all in a day's work really. Um I've
watched the first half back. I've got
another half to go. Then I've got to
watch Bristol Rovers this afternoon
ahead of our game Saturday. So, it's
nice to be interrupted by, you know,
things such as this. But,
yeah, it's a terrific night we had last
night for the for the town, the
community, everyone associated with
Grimsby Town. And it's why we why we
work hard. It's why we try and improve
every day, why we try and get better.
um in the hope that we manage to beat a
team full of superstars with with all
the riches and all the all the prestige
and stature that is a club such as
Manchester United.
>> If you don't mind me saying, David,
you're cutting a pretty laid-back
figure. Is is that the key to this the
to kind of keep the cool head despite
the challenges that sometimes pose to
you and and to the side? Yeah, my my job
is to remain calm so the players know
that they've got a
um
a a a level-headed manager that if
they've got any problems on or off the
pitch even that they know I'm not going
to be as high as a kite and irrational
in one sense or lower than a snake's
belly and depressed at the other end.
They they will come to me and they want
answers and I've got to provide the
answers for them. So yes, it's great. I
hope they're enjoying their day off.
We've given them a day off. I hope
they're resting, recovering, and
you know, refueling. We've given them,
you know, plenty of uh nutrition advice.
Our nutritionist has given given them
lots of lots of um information because
we've this is game seven of eight this
month and 10 in 36 days. So, it's a
tough schedule for us.
>> Um but at the same time, my job is to
prepare for the next game. Don't get too
carried away because if you do then
football has a awful habit of kicking
you right in the shins and I want my
team to go out there on Saturday and
play as well as they did last night.
>> You're keeping it together. I think it's
fair to say that the sellout 8,647
strong crowd had a slightly different
reaction. We saw that footage a few
moments ago. What was the atmosphere
like when when that that bull hit the
crossbar and you guys sealed that
historic win?
>> It was it was electrical night. I have
to say the noise at the final when when
the ball hit the bar. It wasn't the
first time there there was noise like
that last night and it wasn't just the
goals either. There was there was
moments throughout the whole game where
um the crowd really got behind us. You
know, it's the it's the best atmosphere
I've certainly heard at Blundle Park by
a distance. And like I said, the crowd
definitely played their part. I thought
they were magnificent. And that's what
it takes. That's what it takes to beat a
club the size and stature of Manchester
United. And and we we do it together. We
can't do it as a group of individuals.
We've got to do it as a team, as a
collective. And that's not just the
players. That is everyone associated
with the club. You know, the ticket
ticket office staff did an unbelievable
job of getting every ticket sold in such
a short period of time and all the staff
getting the ground ready. All that all
that kind of thing comes together and
it's not lost on us as a group of staff
and a group of players. What goes into
making a football club special such as
Grimby Town?
>> It was a bittersweet night though, was
it not for your goalkeeper who is a
self-proclaimed fan of Manchester
United. So, he's disappointed and
thrilled at the same time. How how does
that work?
>> Yeah, I I didn't know he was a
Manchester United fan. It's not a
question that I ask players when I'm
doing due diligence. You know, do do you
who's the who's the Premier League club
of your of your choice? Um, so obviously
when he said that it surprised me a
little bit afterwards, but I'm sure
he'll get over it. I'm pretty certain
Chris is a cool cat. He's a real cool,
calm cucumber behind the defense there.
He's got really high standards. He
played extremely well last night as they
all did. Um, and I'm sure he'll get over
the fact that he's helped knock knock
knock his team out.
>> The next challenge lies ahead of you.
How how will you kind of bring the team
back down to to solid ground from Cloud9
to to get ready for the next match?
>> I think that's going to be part of a a
challenge, but I think the professional,
you know, somebody asked me before the
game, how have you kept the lad's feet
focused on the league games before we
play Manchester United? Well, we won two
and drawn one from the draw to the to
the Manchester United game. We're
unbeaten all season, seven games in. I
think the lads have been extremely
professional. The integrity is is very
good when when you know I only see them
for four or five hours a day and for the
rest of the time they've got to behave
like a professional footballer and be a
professional footballer. Um and that you
can see the results are showing that
they are. Um so we will talk about it
obviously and share feelings that when
we do a review after every game the
first question I ask how did you feel in
the game that's the first question I
always ask because I think the feelings
are important I really do and and they
will tell us I felt this at this point
this at this point it'll be interesting
to see what they feel throughout the the
90 minutes of last night's game and use
that as learning and you know
understanding players better and what
they need from us as staff going forward
and and that that will you know lead
into what how we what interventions we
give them and what we say to certain
players for the rest of Friday and and
before the game on Saturday.
>> David David Artel Grimby Town Manager
really appreciate you sharing your time
and and all the best for the rest of the
Caribel Cup as well. Thank you. No
problem.
>> Thanks guys.
